100 Backpacks, 100 New Beginnings

Children in a bright classroom

For too many children in the communities we serve, the start of a new school year comes with a quiet worry: no notebook, no pencils, no backpack to carry them in. This fall, we set out to change that for at least 100 kids.

Working with local schools and community partners, our volunteers spent the summer collecting donations and packing backpacks — one for every child identified as needing support. Each bag included the basics: notebooks, pencils and pens, a ruler, crayons, and a few school-appropriate essentials many families simply couldn't afford that month.

On distribution day, the line of kids waiting to pick up their new backpacks stretched around the block. Volunteers called out names, and one by one, children left with something more than supplies — they left with the sense that someone had shown up for them before the year even began.

Teachers told us the difference showed up almost immediately. Fewer students borrowing pencils from classmates. Fewer kids sitting out of an assignment because they didn't have the materials. Small things, but they add up to a classroom where every child can actually participate from day one.

None of this happens without people who believe that a backpack full of supplies is really a vote of confidence in a child's future. We're already planning next year's drive — and hoping to reach even more students before the bell rings.
